A Paper Eliza Love Story #6, Mother's Day Edition
In honor of the most deserving holiday yesterday, MOTHER’S DAY! I thought it would be fun to interview my mother, Alison Bishop, on her wedding paper, over twenty-seven years ago last month. It was so incredibly special to get to relive my parent’s wedding day with my mom and I am so excited to share a peak into their beautiful day. My parents, Alison and Whit, live in Spartanburg, South Carolina and are really, truly the best parents ever. Enjoy this sweet little interview and pictures from their big day.
When and where was your wedding?
My wedding was April 29, 1995 in Greenwood, SC
How did you meet your husband?
My husband and I meet in college. I was introduced to him at a party and I came home and told my roommate that I met a guy that night that I really liked and she said I bet you're going to marry this guy. Five years later we were married! On October 24, 1990 I went to a birthday party his family had for him and November 1 we had our first date. We have been together ever since.
How did he propose?
My husband proposed by inviting me to go eat at a Mexican restaurant with some friends. However, when we started heading in another direction, he told me he had to pick something up. We drove to a cabin that his family had in the woods. We walked in and to my surprise he had a restaurant come out and serve us a gourmet meal. I still have the menu the restaurant owner wrote out. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. We called our family and friends to tell them the exciting news. My family already knew because Whit had driven to Tennessee to ask permission from them. Whit's family already knew too. We drove over to his parents' house because they lived in the same town. We were so excited!
Were you surprised?
I was a little surprised but not too much because I thought it was coming soon.
Describe to me your wedding paper vision.
I wanted stationary to be classic, traditional and high quality. My mom wanted it to be engraved. There was a stationary shop in Statesville, NC where my mom got her wedding stationary that did engraved stationary at a reasonable price. My sister got her wedding stationary there as well.
Did you have anything specific that you wanted to include in your paper?
I picked out the script but that was it. My mom handled everything else.
What papers did you include in your suite?
Noone did save the dates. I got engraved calling cards and thank you note cards from the same place. We ordered the programs from a print shop in Greenwood, SC where I was living. I picked out a Celtic cross for the front of it because I liked the story that the cross was used when St. Patrick was converting the pagans in Ireland. The circle was a pagan symbol and they put the cross over it to symbolize Christ over all.
What was your favorite memory from your big day?
I don't think I have a favorite memory there were so many. It was one of the prettiest days I've ever seen. It was so special to see everything that we planned come together. It was fun to have so many people that we cared about all in one place. Everyone was so kind and happy for us. It was special to have my dad marry us along with our minister that we really liked, John Wall. It was special to say the vows to someone that I loved very much and to know that I truly wanted to be with until "death do us part". I was very thankful. It was fun to drive away to go on our honeymoon. Everything seemed so fresh and new!
